The
History

The Story of Customs House

Built in 1884, Echuca Customs House is a fine example of the Public Works Department’s polychrome brick style. Designed by J.H. Harvey under the direction of G. Watson, the Gothic-inspired building features round-arch windows, incised keystones, and a slate roof with iron finials. It served as Echuca’s customs office during the town’s boom as Australia’s busiest inland port, playing a vital role in collecting duties on goods carried by paddle steamers from inland farms to coastal markets.
